JoyceDeWitt began appearing on stage at 13 years old. She graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree from Ball State University. The director suggested that she enroll in UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program. In the program, she was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship along with the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt stated that she had never met actor Abe Vigoda while she was at UCLA. She worked as secretary during her time at UCLA. The role she played by DeWitt as Janet Wood in Three's Company's run from 1977 to 1984 is her most famous. She was part of the pilot episode of the show and later employed. Janet was also in an episode of The Ropers in which she starred in the year 1979. DeWitt was the final actor to appear in Three's Company's 1984 finale. Then, she appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. After that she ceased acting for a long time. In June 1991, she returned to acting by playing a part in Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. Then she appeared on the TV comedy Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain aired an episode in 1997 that featured an actress who was based on her. The voice actor was another actress. She appeared in an episode of Cybill and also had an appearance on the final episode of Living Single. The 2000s work of her include television shows like Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
